Chambering

One of the most important parts of a precision rifle is the quality of the chamber job. It needs to be cut straight and on size with the reamer.

We double check the tailstock alignment before every single chamber job. Indication inside the bore is checked multiple times throughout the barrel work to be sure nothing has moved. The throat is looked at in the bore scope as it starts to cut to be sure everything is looking as it should.

We also take detailed notes on every chamber we cut, recording all key dimensions and anything we notice that may be different or peculiar during the job for reference later. These notes include everything needed for us to cut you another barrel to the same specs later when you want another caliber or burn your current barrel out.

Barrel Indication

A proper chamber job all starts with the quality of the bores indication in the lathe. It is our belief that the most crucial part of the chamber is the accuracy to which the chamber throat is centered in the barrels bore. Good chamber throats come from precision lathe bearings, proper indication and solid work holding.

There are many places inside the bore to indicate from, we believe the best spot to dial in is exactly where the bullet will sit and where it’s headed in the immediate future. Where we indicate the bore is determined by the length of the specific cartridge we are chambering for.

We have invested in the best indicators we know of that allow us to direct read on the bore way up inside where the throat will be cut. That means no bushings, no stacked tolerances, and no way to negatively influence the indicator reading with unreliable methods of “feel” by inserting rods or slip fit bushings in the bore.

We take great care in making sure that the barrels bore is indicated to dead zero. We do understand that there’s is a tolerance to every indicator and indicating method but we don’t ever settle for “good enough.” It’s either indicated dead zero or no cuts are made on the barrel.

Action Tuning

On top of starting with the best actions we have found, every action that SCR builds on is tuned, timed and ignition blueprinted so all the parts are working in unison as they were intended without drag or binding.

The benefits of tuning your action are: higher ignition energy, consistent primer ignition shot to shot, less bolt vibration during fire and the smoothest actions you’ve ever felt in your life. This in turn leads to consistently smaller groups without unexplained fliers and smoother reloading cycles that don’t shift your rifle off your target when you extract and chamber another round.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of consistent and high ignition energy of your primer. I have seen rifles that had poor ignition characteristics go from .75moa guns to solid .250moa or less simply from correcting primer seating techniques and the ignition system in the action.

What are the chances that your action is already perfect from the factory? From my experience it’s about 1%. To put this in perspective I have tuned hundreds of actions and I have had one or two of them that I didn’t really do anything to.
Do not mistake me, the action companies do a fantastic job and we are getting a lot of value for our dollar however they are still a mass produced item.

Tolerance stack on multiple parts, tool wear, and burrs can create negative results that will utterly destroy the precision of your rifle if not caught and addressed. At SCR we don’t leave it to chance. We are not a production shop, we are a custom shop. Every action comes apart and is tuned for precise timing, no binding and the internals get a mirror polish to reduce drag. When your rifle is built here you can count on it being smoother and more consistent than our competitors.

Detailed Fit and Finish

One mark of a high quality product is how well all the parts fit and interface with one another. This has little to do with performance but it’s the right way to do things and makes your rifle a work of art. Depending on your component selection the standard SCR fit and finish package includes cerakote patterns applied by Primal Finish as well as blending and fitment of the bolt handle, action tang, ejection port, bottom metal and bolt stop in the stock. All of this adds up to your rifle standing in a class of its own visually.

Verification

Every rifle we build is test fired to ensure proper feeding, extraction and precision.
It’s extremely important to us to know that what we are handing over to our prized customer is something you can be successful with regardless of your chosen discipline.

Bedding

Proper bedding will ensure your rifle will continue to perform to a high standard of precision and your zero will remain unchanged in difference environmental conditions for years to come.

To get a good bed job it is extremely important that we do not induce any stress in the barreled action while the epoxy cures. Zero stress allows us to clamp the barreled action in the stock very tight without altering the natural state of the action which would negatively affect harmonics and repeatability.

We custom fit every barrled action in the stock with properly sized pillars to optimize feeding and stock fitment with bottom metal and action. We ensure the barrel is centered in the forend and at the tang so the rifle tracks straight under fire.

The type of epoxy we use has been tested against others in lab conditions and has proven to have the least amount of shrinkage over time as well as the least amount of variation from one environmental condition to the next.

The finished product is a carefully hand crafted bed of hard epoxy in an exact negative mold of your action which provides a solid foundation for consistency and precision.

Measuring Bedding Stress

You can’t tell if a bedding job is good simply by looking at it. A good bedding job is a stress free fit when the action is screwed in. It is a mark of a true craftsman when the bedding is smooth with no voids and the clean up job is done nicely, but to tell the quality of the bedding you need an indicator.
At SCR we test our bedding jobs with an indicator to be sure everything went the way we wanted it to. If not it gets milled out and re-done.

Barrel Channel Fitment

Barrel channel fit is often overlooked. Though not ranked in importance with chamber, bedding or ignition energy I see many rifles that have insufficient clearance that cause problems.

The barrel is not static under fire, it whips and waves similar to the waves in a pool and not necessarily always vertically.

There is no negative to extra barrel clearance so we err on the side of more clearance than not enough. We also ensure that the clearance is uniform on both sides of the barrel.

Bedding Scope Rings

Have you ever had your scope slip in the rings or after being torqued into your rings your scopes parallax or optical zoom is stuff to turn? Bedding your scope rings can fix both problems.

There are two common problems with scopes slipping in the rings, surface finish and ring to scope fitment.
Both the aluminum rings and scope tubes are anodized. Both have great surface finish that is further improved by anodizing. Anodizing though highly durable and corrosion resistant contains high lubricity characteristics and a smoother finish. Stacking these two surfaces together and expecting no slipping isn’t a good combo.

Scope to ring fitment isn’t always perfect either. Pick two of the highest grade manufacturers in both fields and they still won’t always fit as intended. Both components have a tolerance and if we get one on the high side of the tolerance and the other on the low side then we’re setting ourselves up for the worst case scenario of either scope slipping or potential damage to your optic.

We bed the rings on all our scopes we mount to ensure a perfect stress free fit. Doing it this way requires less torque on the ring caps to hold the scope and is much less prone to slipping, fits better and helps protect the finish on your optic from damage or marks.

Customer Support

We know how frustrating it can be to call a company only to be ghosted or have to talk to a “support person” on the phone. We enjoy talking with our customers to address your questions and needs concerning your rifle build. When you call SCR you’re always talking to the person who consults with you, builds your rifle, shoots it, and ships it. We may build fewer rifles than some other shops but both the quality our rifles and the quality of our customers are on a level not found elsewhere.
